Fisher engagement stories updated with multimedia

One of the things for which St. John Fisher College is known is community service. A series of stories written earlier this semester by students in the Feature Writing class focused on projects around the campus in which Fisher students put their time and talents into such service.

Amanda Carpenter described the activities of SWAV, short for Students With A Vision, which emphasizes service in the local communities such as city schools.

Chelsea Yaeger and Stevie Goulette both investigated service work overseas, including a trip that nursing students took to Kenya and also a service trip to work with poor children in Jamaica. With photos provided by some of their sources, they also compiled photo gallery slide shows of both the Kenya trip and the Jamaica experience.

An English Department class took on the service learning task of helping older people learn about Facebook. Maricatherine Garcea presented that story, along with a slide show about the project narrated by one of the students in the class, Emily Sobilo.

Finally, students from various areas of the college volunteered to spend time at Bethany House, a refuge for women facing difficulties in their lives. Nicoletta Persi both wrote about the program and also collected some video interviews of students who did the volunteering to get their firsthand impressions.

(Note: Individual links to the text stories can be found further down in the blog, but this updated summary was created to re-post those links along with the affiliated multimedia presentations.)

Young professionals adjust to working world

According to the theme song from the '80s sitcom Cheers, "making your way in the world today takes everything you've got."

Some recent graduates of the Fisher Communication/Journalism program are finding that out by living it, and their stories are told here.

For instance, Emily Engle, Melissa Gonzales and Katie Tipper all found their niche within the world of sales. And while all of them feel they have a natural knack for selling, that doesn't reduce the need for hard work. Nicoletta Persi tells their story.

Lindsay Reap, Anne Marie Heiligman and Kristy Guerra, meanwhile, not only found jobs with three of Rochester's most prestigious corporations but also were placed in charge of important projects to manage all by themselves very early in their careers. Chelsea Yaeger describes what they are doing.

Paula Zimmer, Libby Hurley and Jenna Bellucci all found themselves in marketing support positions with various tasks, but one thing in common: the need for a strong work ethic to keep their competitive edge. Maricatherine Garcea describes why they find that so important

Nadine Krimow and Sherry Jackson majored in communication at Fisher thinking they wanted to be television journalists. Both changed their paths along the way and ended up working in public relations/advertising agencies. Stevie Goulette explains why they decided to go in a different direction.

In similar fashion, three young journalists -- Craig Kanalley, Bill Kuchman and Emily Shearing -- also ended up in jobs that weren't exactly what they imagined when they started their college career. Amanda Carpenter has their story.

The one thing all of the young professionals have in common is early-career success. They also have similar stories to tell about how their college experiences, especially internships, prepared them for what they are doing now -- or in some cases, helped them decide what they did not want to be doing professionally. All of them are making their way in the world by giving it all that they've got.
